Datong's old city wall is fully illuminated at night and the rebuilt 6.5km loop is one of the most photogenic reconstructed walls in China. This 3-hour evening walking tour starts at the Drum Tower at sunset, walks along the eastern city wall to the Confucian Temple corner, descends into the old courtyard alleyways for street snacks (Datong knife-cut noodles, fried oat cakes, lamb skewers, brown sugar mai cakes), and ends at the East Gate fountain show (8pm in summer). Walking ~3km flat. Best for travelers spending one night in Datong before heading to Yungang/Pingyao. Inexpensive add-on to a daytime tour.
